Lake Todos los Santos

·

At the foot of Osorno volcano, Lake Todos los Santos is one of the major natural sites of northern Chilean Patagonia, accessible from Puerto Varas.

Lake Todos los Santos is one of Chile's most remarkable natural gems. Located in the Lake District in the country's south, this breathtaking glacial lake is an essential destination for nature lovers, adventurers, and those passionate about unique landscapes. Whether you're an avid hiker or simply seeking tranquility and beauty, Lake Todos los Santos is the ideal place for complete immersion in the wild nature of Chilean Patagonia.

Geographic Characteristics

Lake Todos los Santos, situated in the Los Lagos region in southern Chile, nestles between the city of Puerto Varas and Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park. It spans approximately 178.5 km² with an impressive maximum depth of 337 meters. Its jagged shoreline stretches roughly 125 km, offering varied and spectacular landscapes.

This lake is characterized by the intense blue-green hue of its waters. This exceptional coloration results from minerals in glacial meltwater and the influence of surrounding glaciers. Surrounded by steep mountains and emblematic volcanoes such as Osorno to the west, Puntiagudo to the north, and Tronador to the east, the lake cuts deep into the Andes cordillera.

Moreover, Todos los Santos is primarily fed by the Peulla River. Its surroundings, composed of lush forests and small plains, remain largely unspoiled, far from mass tourism's commotion. This gives the place a peaceful and authentic character.

History

Lake Todos los Santos, whose Spanish name means "lake of all saints," owes its name to its discovery by Jesuits on All Saints' Day, November 1st, 1670. At that time, these missionaries were exploring the region to find a passage through the Andes.

Before adopting this name, the lake was known by various indigenous designations such as Purailla, Pichilauquen, and Quechocavi. In the nineteenth century, the lake also captured the attention of German settlers, who nicknamed it "Lake Esmeralda" because of the emerald color of its crystal-clear waters. However, the name given by Jesuit missionaries, Todos los Santos, is the one that endured.

The lake's geological history dates back more than 20,000 years, to a period when this area was still dominated by an immense glacier. It took thousands of years for this glacier to retreat, leaving a glacial basin traversed by rivers. Only about 10,000 years ago did lava flows from the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes form a natural dam, trapping the rivers' waters and giving birth to Lake Todos los Santos.

Lake Todos los Santos is accessible by several means, each offering a unique experience for discovering the region. Located approximately 50 km from Puerto Varas and roughly 85-100 km from Puerto Montt, the lake is well connected by land and sea.

From Puerto Varas, Route 225 crosses picturesque landscapes to reach the port of Petrohué, at the lake's western end. Although the road can be demanding due to mountainous topography, it offers stunning views of the region. Those preferring more direct access can opt for very popular boat excursions, which allow navigation on the lake. These cruises connect the two main ports, notably Petrohué to the west and Peulla to the east.

Furthermore, for those arriving by air, El Tepual Airport in Puerto Montt and the aerodromes of Frutillar and Puerto Varas offer convenient options for reaching the region.
