Puerto Montt, gateway to Chilean Patagonia: Angelmo market, curanto, volcanoes, fjords and Navimag cruises. Everything you need to prepare your stop.

Nestled in the heart of the Lakes region, Puerto Montt is far more than a simple port city. It stands as a gateway to Chilean Patagonia, a wild and magnificent territory that captivates travellers from around the world. Founded in 1853 by German settlers, the city has retained a unique charm, blending European traditions with Chilean culture. Whether you're drawn to nature, history, or culture, Puerto Montt offers something to satisfy your curiosity and create unforgettable memories.

History

Puerto Montt's history is deeply intertwined with German immigration in the mid-19th century. The Chilean president of that era (1851 to 1861), Manuel Montt, encouraged the settlement of European colonists in the country's south to develop the region. German families arrived at Reloncavi Bay, founding the city that would bear the president's name.

Dozens of pioneers had landed aboard the ship "Janequeo," having departed from Corral Bay. The latter is situated at the mouth of the Valdivia River on the shores of the Pacific Ocean. The settlers played a major role in transforming the region, introducing modern agricultural techniques and contributing to the development of local infrastructure.

During the 20th century, Puerto Montt became an important economic centre thanks to its strategic position and access to the Pacific Ocean. The city also served as a departure point for exploration and colonisation of lands further south, particularly in Patagonia.

Climate

Puerto Montt enjoys a temperate oceanic climate, characterised by mild, humid winters and cool summers. Rainfall is frequent throughout the year, contributing to the lush greenery surrounding the city. During winter, temperatures range from -5°C at their lowest to 12°C at their highest, while in summer they fluctuate between 8°C as a minimum and 27°C as a maximum. The best time to visit Puerto Montt falls between November and March, when the climate is more favourable.

What to See in Puerto Montt?

There are numerous places and attractions to discover in Puerto Montt. Here are some examples of must-see locations during a visit to this city:

Plaza de Armas and Nuestra Señora del Carmen Cathedral

Plaza de Armas, also known as the Arms Square, is the historic heart of the city, featuring traditional architecture and a wooden cathedral. This main square is also known as Buenaventura Martinez in honour of the captain who founded the city in the 19th century.

Nuestra Señora del Carmen Cathedral, located on Plaza de Armas, is the region's oldest wooden church. It was built in 1856 using alerce wood in a neoclassical style reminiscent of the Parthenon in Athens. One of the pillars of its façade contains the stone marking the city's foundation. Nearby stands the San Francisco de Sales chapel, characterised by its neo-gothic stained glass windows.

Angelmo Market

Angelmo Market is one of Puerto Montt's most emblematic places, renowned for its lively and colourful atmosphere. Located along the docks, this fish market offers a unique immersion into local culture. You'll find a wide variety of fresh products, including seafood, vegetables, and regional specialities. Neighbouring restaurants serve traditional dishes such as "curanto," a delicious stew made with seafood, meat, and vegetables, cooked in an underground oven using an ancestral method.

Furthermore, Angelmo Avenue, influenced by tourism, has become a sought-after destination for discovering artisanal treasures such as:

  • Sheep wool textiles
  • Objects carved from Guaitecas cypress wood
  • Lapis lazuli jewellery.

You can also discover and taste delicacies like alfajores and chocolate truffles.

Juan Pablo II Museum

The Museo Municipal Juan Pablo II is a must-visit for those wishing to delve into Puerto Montt's history and surroundings. This museum traces the major stages of the region, from the traditions of indigenous peoples to German colonisation, which marked its development.

Exhibitions present traditional objects from Chilote culture. You can also see period photographs illustrating the transformation of a modest fishing village into a flourishing port city. The museum also dedicates a section to significant events, such as Pope John Paul II's historic visit. Furthermore, to make the most of this cultural experience, it's recommended to check opening hours, which may vary.

Traditional Monuments

Built in 1872, the Jesuit Church was constructed from alerce wood, like many traditional buildings in the region. Within two decades, more than half of the buildings dating from the German pioneers' settlement disappeared, mainly due to fires or demolitions. Among the rare buildings classified as national monuments are the bell tower of San Francisco Javier College, still in operation, and Casa Pauly, intended to host a cultural centre.
