Valle del Francés
Valle del Francés
Central branch of the W trek within Torres del Paine National Park, Valle del Francés connects the suspended glacier of Paine Grande to Mirador Británico.
Valle del Francés, literally "Valley of the Frenchman" in Spanish, stands as one of the most spectacular natural jewels of Chilean Patagonia. Located within the renowned Torres del Paine National Park, it is traversed by the río del Francés. This valley is celebrated for its breathtaking panoramas, diverse landscapes, and its essential role in hiking circuits. Whether you're a trekking enthusiast or a lover of grand vistas, Valle del Francés will captivate your imagination and leave you with unforgettable memories.
History
In the late 19th century, the province of Última Esperanza witnessed the arrival of the first settlers, primarily Europeans seeking new opportunities and a better life. While an initial wave of Spanish, English, and German colonists had established themselves around the Last Hope fjord, those who followed had to content themselves with less accessible lands. They settled around the great lakes and steep valleys of the Paine mountain range. Among them was a French colonist named Adrian Bader, who established himself on the northern shore of Lake Nordenskjöld, at the foot of the Cuernos del Paine, in a vast verdant valley. He was quickly nicknamed "the French man" by local inhabitants. The valley where he had settled was subsequently named "Valle del Francés" in his honor.
Geography and Landscapes
Valle del Francés is a perfect example of a glacial valley, characterized by its sheer walls and impressive mountain formations. To the east, it is framed by the imposing Cuernos del Paine, horn-shaped peaks that dominate the horizon, and by the summits of Horns and Bader. To the west, Cerro Paine Grande, the park's highest peak, completes this grand panorama. The valley offers a unique setting shaped by the forces of nature.
One of the most fascinating aspects of Valle del Francés is its geographical richness. As you traverse its trails, you pass through lush beech forests, walk alongside tumultuous rivers like the río del Francés, and find yourself face-to-face with suspended glaciers, such as Glaciar Francés. This latter, visible from a viewpoint situated midway through the valley, is a true attraction. Indeed, visitors can observe, amid impressive rumbling, blocks of ice breaking away from the glacier.
The valley is also renowned for its viewpoints offering breathtaking panoramas. The trails cross strategic zones, allowing admiration of certain peaks such as Los Cuernos and Cerro Paine Grande. At Mirador Británico, adventurers are rewarded with a 360-degree view over the entire valley and surrounding mountains.
Accommodations and Campsites
Valle del Francés offers two main campsites where hikers can spend the night:
- Campamento Italiano: situated at the base of the valley, it is the ideal starting point for exploring trails leading to Glaciar del Francés or Mirador Británico.
- Campamento Británico: Nestled higher in the valley, it offers direct access to the exceptional panoramas of Mirador Británico.
These refuges allow visitors to rest before continuing their exploration, while offering total immersion in the surrounding nature.
To reach Valle del Francés, you must first go to Puerto Natales, a small town situated approximately 112 km from Torres del Paine National Park. It is the starting point for most visitors to the region. Then you must reach the park, whether by bus, rental car, or guided excursion, depending on your preferences.
To access the valley, hikers can take one of two main routes, each offering different itineraries and landscapes:
- From the west, you can follow the trail departing from Graderías Pehoe, the CONAF forest guard station, leading to the head of the valley and Campamento Italiano.
- From the east, you can access Campamento Italiano directly by following the trail along the northern shore of Lake Nordenskjöld.
These itineraries allow visitors to discover the diversity of terrain and ecosystems within the park, while gradually approaching the emblematic peaks surrounding the valley.
When to Visit?
The best period to discover Valle del Francés extends from November to March, corresponding to the southern summer. During these months, temperatures are milder, ranging between 5 and 15 °C, and days are long, allowing you to fully enjoy the trails.
However, it is important to note that weather conditions in Patagonia are unpredictable. Wind can reach impressive speeds, and rain showers occur at any time. It is therefore essential to prepare for all contingencies.
What to Do in Valle del Francés?
Among the activities visitors can enjoy during a visit to Valle del Francés, we can mention:
Hiking
Valle del Francés constitutes one of the most memorable stages of the "W" trek. This circuit, whose name derives from the "W" shape traced by the trails, extends over 5 days and connects three of the park's most emblematic sites: the base of the Towers, Valle del Francés, and the Grey Glaciers. This trek is a demanding expedition requiring a crossing of Lake Pehoe by catamaran. In the distance, you can also perceive the rumbling of small avalanches and the crash of ice blocks breaking away from the glaciers.
Moreover, for visitors seeking an even more immersive experience, it is possible to extend exploration by incorporating the valley into the complete "O" circuit trek, which circles the entire park.
Furthermore, for those who do not wish to complete the entire "W" trek, it is entirely possible to visit the valley on a day hike. This option, though demanding, is ideal for visitors with less time available but wishing to discover the essence of this exceptional place.
Wildlife Observation
Like the rest of Torres del Paine National Park, Valle del Francés is home to diverse fauna. It is not uncommon to encounter:
- The Andean fox or mountain fox
- The huemul deer
- The Magellanic woodpecker
- The chimango caracara or Tiuque
- The Sierra finch
It is sometimes possible to spot condors soaring across the sky.
