A Brief Overview of Palena

Located in the heart of the Lakes Region in Chilean Patagonia, Palena is a commune of wild and authentic beauty. Its area of 2,764 km² borders Argentina to the east and lies 1,136 km south of Santiago and 257 km southeast of Puerto Montt. In 2012, Palena's population stood at 1,827 inhabitants.

The provincial capital, Futaleufú, spans 15,301.9 km² and has a population of 18,971. The province is divided into four communes: Chaitén, Futaleufú, Hualaihué, and Palena. It belongs to the Los Lagos Region, which also comprises the provinces of Llanquihue, Chiloé, and Osorno.

Palena enjoys a temperate oceanic climate with no dry season. Rainfall is more abundant in summer than in winter. The average annual temperature is 10.6°C, with average precipitation of 931.6 mm.
