A land at the end of the world, Patagonia captivates above all for its exceptional landscapes, of a unique wild beauty. For nature lovers, it is one of the most beautiful vacation destinations : you can see magnificent wildlife such as blue whales or orcas, vast colonies of penguins or sea lions, albatrosses or condors... As for scenery, you never tire of its steep coastlines, verdant fjords, soaring peaks and emerald lakes. Not to mention the numerous glaciers (more than 300) that blanket this "end of the world". An opportunity to stand humbly before the immensity of the Earth, to approach these giants of ice by kayak or traverse them with crampons, to hear the overwhelming sounds of ice in motion, or to witness the sad effects of climate change. Here is our guide to the most beautiful glaciers of the region, which you absolutely must add to your itinerary when you plan your trip to Patagonia.

The Most Beautiful Glaciers of Patagonia

Perito Moreno

Located in Argentine Patagonia, Perito Moreno is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful glaciers in the world. It is moreover classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site and is sometimes called the 8th wonder of the world!

Perito Moreno is the emblem of the Los Glaciares National Park. This giant of ice spills into the emerald green Argentino lake. At 60 meters high, it towers magnificently above it, forming a sort of dam. From time to time, blocks crash down with a thunderous roar. In fact, it is one of the noisiest glaciers in the world, which is why it attracts so many visitors.

Plan a cruise on the lake to get up close to this ice mass and admire it with reverence. Also take time to go hiking in the forests that surround it.

Grey Glacier

On the Chilean side, in the Torres del Paine National Park, which was formed by centuries of glacial movement, Grey Glacier stretches 28 km long and 6 km wide. Though not very thick, the Grey Glacier sits beautifully above Lago Grey. You can visit it with crampons, or venture onto the lake that cuts the glacier in two. Surrounded on both sides by an impressive field of ice, you'll have a 360-degree view ! It is especially this lake that is breathtaking, with the immense blocks of ice floating upon it.

Queulat Glacier

The Queulat National Park in Chile is home to a wonder of ice known worldwide: the Queulat hanging glacier, also known as Ventisquero Colgante. Though not very large, it is truly sublime, as this glacier is nestled between two steep mountains on a vertiginous cliff. It flows into Laguna Tempanos via a large waterfall of milky white color.

Discovered in 1875, the glacier once extended almost to the sea, now located some 8 km away. Its ice has been replaced by a large lake into which it continues to melt.

Pia Glacier

In the legendary Beagle Channel in Chile, Pia Glacier fascinates scientists from around the world. It is one of the only glaciers in the region that continues to advance, despite climate change. It is also the longest glacier in the Southern Hemisphere (excluding Antarctica, of course), so yes, there is reason to be impressed ! It is best discovered during a cruise through Patagonia.

The Most Beautiful Glaciers of Patagonia

Balmaceda and Serrano Glaciers

The magnificent Bernardo O'Higgins Chilean National Park is home to some of Patagonia's most stunning glaciers. Among them are the Balmaceda and Serrano glaciers, which flow into the sea. They nestle in the lovely Esperanza Fjord, an ideal cruising destination to encounter cliffs, waterfalls, and incredible wildlife including large colonies of sea lions.

Spegazzini Glacier

On the border between Argentina and Chile, Spegazzini Glacier is the tallest in Los Glaciares National Park. With a depth of 135 meters, this giant overlooks the sea and promises superb boat discoveries. You'll navigate between imposing icebergs...

The Most Beautiful Glaciers of Patagonia

Upsula Glacier

The Upsula Glacier is truly worth the detour. A vast sea of ice, it extends 60 km in length and covers 870 km², breaking numerous records. It is one of 47 glaciers in Los Glaciares Park and, like Perito Moreno, it flows into Argentino Lake. Unfortunately, this glacier is melting very rapidly. Since 2001, it has reportedly retreated at least 3 km according to satellite imagery.

Viedma Glacier

Also on the border, this glacier is one of the largest in South America : its surface area exceeds 900 km²! A beautiful natural formation to discover by boat or on foot...

Yes, several Patagonia glaciers are accessible by hiking with crampons. Grey Glacier (Torres del Paine) and Perito Moreno offer guided excursions on the ice. It is essential to pursue this activity with a certified guide and proper equipment (crampons, poles, waterproof clothing).

Perito Moreno Glacier, located in Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina, is the most famous in Patagonia. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is nicknamed the 8th wonder of the world. With its 60-meter height towering above Argentino Lake, it is also one of the noisiest glaciers in the world thanks to spectacular ice falls.

Yes, the majority of Patagonia's glaciers are retreating due to climate change. The Upsala Glacier, for example, has retreated at least 3 km since 2001 according to satellite imagery. Queulat Glacier once extended to the sea, now 8 km away. Only Pia Glacier stands as an exception, continuing to advance.
