On the shores of Lake Llanquihue, Ensenada opens the gateway to Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park, Osorno volcano and the Saltos del Petrohué. Our complete guide.

On the shores of Lake Llanquihue, 42 kilometers east of Puerto Varas, Ensenada stands as an authentic jewel in southern Chile. In this charming village of Chilean Patagonia, vast fields mingle with a fine sandy beach stretching 2.5 kilometers long, towering verdant peaks, abundant wildlife and a modest waterfall. At Ensenada, travel means nature and outdoor activities.

A Brief History of Ensenada

The small town of Ensenada was discovered in 1848 by Chilean captain Benjamín Muñoz Gamero. His expedition aimed to find a passage connecting Lake Llanquihue (in Chile) to Lake Nahuel Huapi (in Argentina).

Ensenada, which had experienced rather slow economic development, quickly became a strategic point, enabling communication with Argentina via the Jesuit passage to Nahuelhuapi.

Between the 1880s and 1900, several posts were established for travelers (one of which is now the Ensenada Hotel). Ports and villas were also constructed during this period.

Over time, the town became one of the main tourist centers on the eastern shore of Lake Llanquihue.

Since 1891, Ensenada has lived through numerous eruptions of Calbuco volcano. Its most recent eruption occurred on April 22, 2015, destroying many homes, agricultural land and livestock. Losses were estimated at over 40 million dollars and nearly 900 people had to be evacuated.

Ensenada Today

Ensenada, also known as "Villa La Ensenada",, is a rural town in southern Chile, at the far eastern end of Lake Llanquihue. Nestled in the heart of nature, this locality is considered one of the main tourist hubs in the Los Lagos region and particularly attracts adventure seekers.

Ensenada forms a natural gateway between the city of Puerto Varas and towns near Osorno volcano and Lake Todos los Santos (Petrohué, Peulla, Ralún, Las Cascadas and the Hueñu-Hueñu river). It also provides easy access to Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park.

Today, Ensenada is a major tourist destination with hotels, bungalows, campsites and restaurants. Fishing, rafting and kayaking enthusiasts will find beautiful rivers in the surrounding area to pursue their favorite sports.

There's nothing quite like a stroll along its waterfront or a leisurely day on Ensenada's fine sandy beach.

The town is also renowned for the famous Fiesta de la Murta. You can savor typical pastries made with murta or ulmo honey.

Ensenada, a Beautiful Destination in Chilean Patagonia

Ensenada was formed on the shores of Lake Llanquihue. The glacially-carved valley is bordered to the east by Osorno volcano and to the south by Calbuco volcano. From the latter, the two main rivers of the region originate: the Blanco and the Tepú.

Despite its low altitude of just 70 meters above sea level, Ensenada offers magnificent viewpoints. From the town, you can see the summit of Osorno (2,652 meters), as well as Puntiagudo and Tronador.

The peaceful town of Ensenada is located in the Los Lagos region of Chile. It can be accessed via Route CH-225, which borders the majestic Lake Llanquihue (Chile's second-largest lake). Along the way, you enjoy breathtaking views of Osorno volcano and the stunning landscapes surrounding it. Capped with eternal snow, this volcano provides a setting that is both magical and mystical.

Ensenada is largely situated within the Llanquihue National Reserve. The town serves as a gateway to numerous natural wonders in the region. Among the most renowned are the Saltos del Río Petrohué, Lago Todos Los Santos, Laguna Verde and the Cascadas, which all form part of the magnificent Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park.
